If you want an OLED screen on a retro handheld, the Retroid Pocket line is the cheapest way in: the Pocket Classic is the lowest-priced AMOLED handheld in our data, the Pocket 5 and G2 have 5.5 inch 1080p AMOLED panels, and the Pocket 6 adds a 120 Hz panel. Anbernic's RG557 and the AYN Thor and Odin 3 sit higher.
Our data lists the panel type of every handheld. Ten of the 40 are labelled OLED or AMOLED, and every one of them runs Android. Linux handhelds from Anbernic, Miyoo, TrimUI and Powkiddy all use IPS or similar panels. Two Android handhelds, the AYN Odin 2 Mini and the AYANEO Pocket Micro 2, have no panel type in our data, so they are left out of the list below instead of guessed.

Which OLED handheld for which budget
Cheapest: Retroid Pocket Classic
The Pocket Classic has a 3.92 inch AMOLED screen and a 5000 mAh battery, and our data lists it from $120 (retrocatalog approx street price (not official store), Nov 5, 2026). The trade-offs are written in its data: no analog sticks, no video out, and 4 GB of RAM. It is a handheld for 2D and early 3D games where the screen matters more than the chip. It has no emulation ratings in our data yet, so we do not claim which systems it runs.
The sweet spot: Retroid Pocket 5 and G2
The Pocket 5 and the Pocket G2 both have a 5.5 inch 1080p AMOLED screen, Hall effect sticks and 8 GB of RAM. The data lists the Pocket 5 on a Snapdragon 865 and the G2 on a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, with a 60 Hz screen noted as a con for both. The Pocket 5 starts at $200 (retrocatalog approx street price (not official store), Nov 5, 2026), the G2 at $219 (retrocatalog approx street price (not official store), Nov 5, 2026). Neither has emulation ratings in our data. The chip guide groups the Snapdragon 865 in the mid tier, which is context and not a rating. For a head-to-head against the smaller model see Retroid Pocket 5 vs Mini V2.
Faster: Retroid Pocket 6 and Anbernic RG557
The Retroid Pocket 6 has a 120 Hz AMOLED panel, active cooling, Wi-Fi 7 and a 6000 mAh battery. Held Games says it handles PS2 and GameCube well, and our chart records both as good; no other system is rated. It launched in January 2026 at $229 to $249 and its price rose afterwards, reportedly because of memory costs. Today it starts at $249 (heldgames.com listing text (header shows $244 / $279 street), Nov 5, 2026).
The Anbernic RG557 has a 5.5 inch 1080p AMOLED panel on a MediaTek Dimensity 8300, with a fan and a USB-C DisplayPort output. Our data rates it great for Dreamcast, PSP, GameCube and PS2 and good for Switch, based on Held Games' review. The same review says Switch 2 emulation is not viable. Price: from $229 (third-party aggregator (heldgames.com street price), Nov 5, 2026).
Biggest screens: AYN Thor and Odin 3
The AYN Thor is a clamshell with two AMOLED screens, 6 inch and 3.92 inch. The Odin 3 has a 6 inch 120 Hz AMOLED and the Odin 3 Portal a 7 inch OLED. Prices went up by $10 in July 2026 according to Notebookcheck, and the Odin 3 is reported to have risen twice this year. The Thor Lite with a Snapdragon 865 is the entry price in our data: from $259 (Notebookcheck report: Thor Lite 8/128 (SD865), Nov 5, 2026). None of the AYN handhelds has emulation ratings in our data yet.
What an OLED screen does and does not fix
An OLED panel lights each pixel on its own, so black areas are black and colors look strong. It does not make a slower chip faster. Check three things beside the panel:
- Refresh rate. The Pocket 5 and G2 are noted as 60 Hz. The Pocket 6 and Odin 3 are noted as 120 Hz.
- Aspect ratio. A 16:9 OLED shows 4:3 systems with black bars. The Odin 3 lists this as a con. The RG557, Pocket 5, G2 and Odin 3 are all listed as 16:9, so old 4:3 systems get bars there too.
- Chip and RAM. Read the chip guide and the emulation chart before you assume a screen means PS2 speed.
OLED on a budget: what is not available
No Linux handheld in our data has an OLED panel, so there is nothing at $60 to $100 that has one. If you are shopping at that price, see best retro handheld under $100. Several OLED models are also pricier than the third-party figures suggest once US tariffs apply; see the AliExpress guide.
Which one to pick
- Pick the Retroid Pocket Classic if you want a small OLED screen at the lowest price and do not need sticks or TV out.
- Pick the Retroid Pocket 5 or G2 for a full-size 1080p AMOLED at mid price, accepting that emulation ratings are missing.
- Pick the Retroid Pocket 6 if you want a 120 Hz AMOLED and the one rated PS2 and GameCube result among the Retroid models.
- Pick the Anbernic RG557 if you want the most emulation ratings on an OLED handheld.
- Pick the AYN Thor or Odin 3 if screen size or a second screen matters and you accept a higher price.
